The NFC can’t compete with the AFC

As I was watching the thursday night football game between the Seahawks and Cardinals, a thought occurred in my head. The AFC is much better than the NFC.

Both the Cardinals and Seahawks are supposed to have unstoppable offense, but last night they looked far from it. Both teams punted four times, each quarterback was sacked three times, and the game that was expected to be an offensive shootout turned out to be boring. Both the Seahawks and Cardinals have below average defenses which makes last night’s game even worse.

These are supposed to be two of the best teams in the NFC, and I don’t think anyone is very impressed. The other NFC “contenders” all have huge weaknesses as well. The Packers run defense is horrible, the Saints have an aging Drew Brees who no one knows when he’ll be fully healthy again, and the Bucs are the most up and down team in football.

If we start comparing NFC teams to AFC teams, the AFC clearly has the two best teams in football in the Chiefs and the Steelers. The third spot is up for grabs but you can make a serious argument that it’s the Bills. If it wasn’t for a Hail Mary, the Bills would be 8-2. After the top three, you can start thinking of some of the top NFC teams, but the top of the top in the NFC is far worse than the the top of the AFC.

We can even look at the Wild Card picture for each conference. The AFC currently has two 6-3 teams not going to make the playoffs in the Browns and the Titans. In the NFC, the first team out of the playoffs is the 5-5 Bears, and everyone else is below .500.

I don’t see a way that the eventual winner of the Super Bowl isn’t from the AFC. My money is still on the Chiefs to repeat, but the Steelers wouldn’t shock me either. Unless Aaron Rodgers has an incredible run, or Drew Brees gets healthy and goes back to old ways, the AFC team will be favored in the Super Bowl.
