Philip Rivers has decided to call it a career after 17 NFL seasons. What a career it was for Rivers. The only thing Rivers doesn’t have is a Super Bowl ring.
Rivers finishes with 421 touchdowns all-time which puts him at fifth best. Those numbers would say that Rivers is worthy of the Hall of Fame, but I don’t see him making it.
Rivers was never considered a top three quarterback in football, and was always in the shadow of other great quarterbacks like Manning, Brees and Brady. Without a Super Bowl Championship, I don’t think Rivers has the credentials to get into the Hall of Fame.
I’m glad Rivers is retiring on his own terms, and can go enjoy the time with his 42 children. That’s a joke obviously, Rivers only has nine kids. I wonder how they feel having to move from San Diego or LA to Indianapolis, just to have their father retire after one year. I assume they even thought this was a multi-year plan.
I am going to be honest, I was ecstatic reading the headline that Rivers retired. I like Rivers as a person but I hated watching him attempt to throw a football every Sunday. Rivers wasn’t terrible this year and had decent stats, but he couldn’t push the ball down the field and missed so many deep throws.
The Colts were never going to contend for a Super Bowl with Rivers, and now they have a chance to get a guy who can. Let’s be honest, the Colts are a QB away from being real contenders. They have a good young defense and the best O-line in football.
There are a few options for the Colts through trade that I like. I would like the Colts to try and trade for Stafford, Darnold or Wentz. These are all QB’s who have proven or shown some sort of NFL skill. Darnold is the youngest and least proven, but I think if he is surrounded by better talent, he’ll have a chance to be very good.
I don’t want the Colts to trade up in the draft and draft an unproven risk at QB. If you want to go that route, just give Jacob Eason, the quarterback you drafted last year a chance this year.
The Colts have some huge decisions to make this offseason, and I have full faith in Chris Ballard to make the right ones.
As for Philip Rivers, I hope retirement is everything you dreamed of, and I wish the best for you and your family.
