In today’s game you need an elite QB to be able to win. Some teams have found their guy while other’s are strangely still believing in a player who is destined to be a backup. Here are all the NFL QB’s in tiers:
Tier 1: The Best
Aaron Rodgers
I believe in tiers you still have to have a best of the best or a number one. It is clear that Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in football and he has been for the past two seasons. He is on his way to winning his second consecutive MVP award and is leading the Packers to the number one seed in the NFC. The only question with Rodgers is where he will decide to play next season.
Tier 2: The Superstars
Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Tom Brady, Justin Herbert
These QB’s round out the top five. These are the quarterbacks who can win you games no matter the circumstances. They can carry a team and in Mahomes, Allen and Herbert’s case, will be leading a team for the next 10-15 years. Who knows when Tom Brady will call it quits but miraculously at age 44 he is still a top five Quarterback in football.
Tier 3: The Franchise QB’s
Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Matthew Stafford, Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott
The next tier of QB’s are franchise guys who at times can be superstars but aren’t as good as the list above. I believe in time a few of these guys can become top five QB’s. Russ was there the last few seasons but he needs a change of scenery if he wants to get back to being up there with the elite.
Tier 4: The Average
Carson Wentz, Ryan Tannehill, Derek Carr, Kirk Cousins, Jimmy Garoppolo
These guys are the middle of the pack. They can win you some games here and there but in order for them to be able to lead a team, they need everything else to be perfect. All of these teams feel okay about their QB but if the opportunity arises, they will look elsewhere for another QB.
Tier 5: The Jury is still out
Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Mac Jones, Trey Lance
The five rookie QB’s have not impressed early but it is still way too early to say how good they are. We need to give these guys a couple more years before deciding if they are the franchise guys or not. I will say out of all four, I have been most impressed with Fields and believe he has the greatest upside out of all of them.
Tier 6: Future backups
Baker Mayfield, Teddy Bridgewater, Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold, Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts, Taylor Heinicke, Jared Goff, Jameis Winston, Tyrod Taylor
By far the most crowded tier. All of these guys have no business starting in the NFL. Most of them will continue to be starters because there are no better options out there but it doesn’t mean they should be. Tua and Baker have great teams around them but are the reason the team isn’t better. Eagles fans and front office believe in Hurts even though he’s a running back trying to play QB. Daniel Jones is a borderline backup QB but the Giants seem like they want him back next year for some reason.
Tier 7: Time to Hang em up
Ben Roethlisberger, Cam Newton, Matt Ryan
All three of these guys should hang it up after the season. Matt Ryan is far better than Ben or Cam but his good days are still behind him. Unless Ryan wants to be a backup somewhere which I doubt he would, he should call it a career also. Cam and Ben should get as far away from football as they can because they have just been horrendous this year.
