Joey Gallo was supposed to be a great trade acquisition last year. He was a big lefty power bat with a swing tailor-made for Yankee stadium. The Yankees thought he’d be the perfect player to slot between Judge and Stanton in the lineup.
Fast forward to this season and Joey Gallo statistically is the worst player in baseball. He is hitting .169 with only 9 Homeruns and 18 RBI’s. He has 183 AB’s this year with 82 strikeouts. His numbers are mind boggling bad. The surprising part of Gallo’s season are his struggles in the outfield. He hasn’t been that gold glover type fielder that we are accustomed to.
The Yankees need to figure out something with Gallo. He can no longer get at-bats for this team, especially in October. There are a lot of options for the Yankees, and I give my options and opinions below.
Joey Gallo vs. Andrew Benintendi

I start with an obvious one. Andrew Benintendi should be the Yankees number one trade candidate this deadline. He is a lefty bat who is also great defensively. He doesn’t hit a ton of homeruns but he hits for average which is something the Yankees desperately need. You can slot him after Stanton in the lineup and make it much deeper. He is hitting .299 this season with 26 RBI’s. The Royals are actively shopping him and the Yankees should be calling.
Answer: Andrew Benintendi
Joey Gallo vs. Miguel Andujar

Miguel Andujar has been treated very unfair by the Yankees. He constantly gets called up and sent down even though he’s producing more than Gallo when he plays. Andujar’s defense has increased dramatically and he deserves to be on the Major League roster, especially over Gallo.
Answer: Miguel Andujar
Joey Gallo vs. Estevan Florial

Florial is another guy that hasn’t got a real chance in the big leagues. The Yankees have often called him up to be the “26th man” for a doubleheader. Now I don’t think Florial is anything special, but I do know I’d rather see him hitting 9th over Gallo. He has some speed that create havoc on the bases and he is above average defensively.
Answer: Estevan Florial
Joey Gallo vs. Tim LoCastro

Another easy one in my opinion. LoCastro offers speed and is good defensively. I miss seeing Timmy pinch run late in games.
Answer: Tim LoCastro
Joey Gallo vs. Cameron Maybin

Now yes I know Maybin no longer plays and is in the YES booth but I still think he can give us more competitive at-bats than Gallo. He was electric a few years ago when he was on the Yankees and I’d still take him over Gallo.
Answer: Cameron Maybin
Joey Gallo vs. Michael Kay

I have no idea if Michael Kay ever played baseball. He doesn’t seem like the most athletic guy, but he’s been calling Yankee games since before I was born. He has to have some knowledge on how to catch and hit a ball. He would also be great in the dugout because he could do play-by-play for the other Yankees when he’s not up. This is the first tough one but I’d still lean Kay.
Answer: Michael Kay
Joey Gallo vs. Yankees Current Ball Girl

Now I am going to be honest I have no idea if the Yankees ball girl or boy rotates for every game or every home stand but I watched a game last week where the ball girl made an all out effort on a ball and it didn’t get by her. An effort that I wouldn’t mind seeing on an everyday basis. Don’t care what she produces at the plate because it can’t be much worse than what Gallo is doing.

Joey Gallo vs. A Tall Oak Tree

Another toss up when looking from afar but the more you think about it the more you see the benefits of the Oak tree. First off the height itself could probably prevent a lot of home runs in Yankee stadium, especially the short porch. If the branches and leaves are full like they are in the picture nothing is getting past it. Another benefit is the shade the tree could offer other players in the dugout and in the field. Aaron Judge would certainly benefit more from having a tree next to him in RF over Gallo. Now the plate would be a struggle considering the tree is not alive and can’t move but if the branches are considered “body” then the tree could have quite a few HBP’s. Again a tough one but I’d go with the tree.
Answer: Oak Tree
Joey Gallo struck out twice while I was writing this article. I do feel bad for the guy but he needs to be off this roster ASAP.
