The New York Yankees, a once proud, winning franchise had their season end once again at the hands of the Houston Astros in the ALCS.
Swept. 4-0. The New York Yankees couldn’t win a single game. It seems like déjà vu every year for the Yankees. Win enough games to get to the playoffs. Be good enough to win against an inferior opponent like the Twins or Guardians, and then run in to the big bad Astros.
The Astros are and were better in every facet of the game in this series. They are what the Yankees wish they were. They hit home runs, they pitch well, they have a dominant bullpen. The difference between the two teams? The Astros players are built for October. They work counts, make contact, and capitalize on mistakes.
The worst part about it all, was that the Yankees weren’t beat by Altuve or Alvarez. They were beat by the bottom of the lineup and Jeremy Pena. Jeremy Pena is a rookie shortstop who the Astros trusted in the biggest stage. Must be nice. Seems like something the Yankees could have done with Peraza, instead of shuffling the SS position every game.
Year in and year out analysts say the same thing about the Yankees. “Great lineup, but will they have enough pitching.” And every single year the pitching is great, and the lineup is the question. This team does not score runs unless they hit homeruns. They can’t manufacture any runs; they don’t get enough base hits. It is becoming so frustrating to continuously watch the same team be put on the field year after year expecting different results. It is the definition of insanity.
Yankees need to make some major moves this offseason. If not, fans shouldn’t bother showing up next year.
