Yankees Offseason Alarm Clock Finally Goes Off?

It is now January 5th, 2026, and there is finally some Yankees offseason news. I don’t even know if news is the right word for this. Some rumors are finally starting with the Yankees. It has been reported that the Yankees are talking to the Miami Marlins about starting pitcher Edward Cabrera. Looks like if the trade gets done, some prospects will be going back to the Marlins, who have a “high ceiling.” Jason Dominguez and Spencer Jones are not reported to be in the deal, which is a good sign for the Yankees.

People have been saying the Yankees’ alarm clock has finally gone off for the offseason. And as a Yankee fan and Yankee diehard, my question is: why does there need to be an alarm clock for the richest team in sports, especially when the teams in your division have gotten better this offseason?

The Blue Jays signed Dylan Cease as early as any free agent and then signed Kazuma Okamoto from Japan. The Rays have made a few trades. The Orioles went and got Pete Alonso. The Red Sox traded for Willson Contreras. The Yankees? They re-signed Amed Rosario.

It’s mind-boggling that the richest team in sports, that has not won a World Series since 2009—which is embarrassing for a franchise like this—has an “alarm clock” on the offseason. And it’s now FINALLY going off after the first of the year. It says their main priority is Cody Bellinger, which is okay. But the fact that he’s your main priority, and yet you still haven’t made any other moves, tells me that he’s the one holding up everything, which is crazy. I like Cody Bellinger. I think he’s a good piece for this team at the right price. But for him to be the one who is holding up your whole offseason makes no sense. If it were Kyle Tucker, who’s younger and better than Cody Bellinger, I maybe could get on board, but Bellinger? It makes no sense.

The fact that Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner have just let this offseason go as it has and have made no significant moves other than re-signing Ahmed Rosario—which, again, I really like the move, but it’s a small move—is wild. It’s the move you make right before the season starts to just round out your roster. Meanwhile, everyone’s getting better.

The Dodgers went and signed Edwin Diaz after winning the World Series the last two years. The Dodgers signed an All-Star closer last year in Tanner Scott. He then went and had a pretty mediocre year—very shaky. Got hurt. Couldn’t be relied on. So, what did the Dodgers do the next offseason? Instead of just saying, “we’ll run it back with the same guy and expect him to just get better,” they went out and signed the best closer on the market.

That is what good organizations do if they want to win and don’t just care about making money. With the Yankees, it is clear as day that the last few years, all they want to do is make money. They don’t care about winning. They want to run back this same team as last year and just hope for different results. I keep seeing reports about how they think they have a good enough team to win the AL. You didn’t come close to winning the AL last year. You clearly didn’t have a good enough team. You’ve gotten worse this offseason, and somehow you think you’re going to win the AL this year?

They gave Trent Grisham a qualifying offer that just completely upended their offseason. It should never have been offered to him in the first place, and it just changes everything. Look, I like Trent Grisham. I liked what he did last year. He had a career year. He’s a great defender. He hit some home runs, but he was terrible in the playoffs, and he’s not a guy that you’d expect to repeat his production from last season. You have Jason Dominguez, you have Spencer Jones, you have two guys who are right there to give opportunity to.

Something is seriously wrong with this organization. An alarm clock for the Yankees? Aaron Judge’s prime is coming to an end in a few years. He probably only has two or three more MVP-type years left until he’s just a good-to-above-average player, and the Yankees are just wasting it. They are absolutely wasting his prime. We have no idea how Gerrit Cole is going to come back after Tommy John. Carlos Rodon is injured to start the year. It’s time for the Yankees to step up and be the New York Yankees. Make a big move. I would like the Cabrera move, but it can’t be Cabrera and Bellinger, and then your offseason’s done. Bo Bichette is still out there. Freddy Peralta is available. A lot of starting pitchers are on the market.

It’s time to wake up and turn the alarm clock off, which should have been going on for the last few years with this franchise, not just this offseason. Yankee fans have been patiently waiting, and if the Yankees want to compete in 2026, a number of moves have to be on the horizon.
